W. Richard Bukata, MD, Program Co-Director
Rick Bukata is the editor and founder of Emergency Medical Abstracts and, as such, has been studying the literature of emergency medicine in depth since 1977. He has personally given presentations at over 250 CME courses and has been the co-moderator of a monthly 90-minute CME audio program for the last 20 years. As a result of his educational endeavors, Rick was awarded the Education Award of the American College of Emergency Physicians in 1993 and the College’s “Outstanding Speaker of the Year” award in 2000. Rick is a Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Southern California and is the Medical Director of the Emergency Department of the San Gabriel Valley Medical Center in Los Angeles.
Kevin M. Klauer, DO, Program Co-Director
Kevin Klauer is the Director of Quality and Clinical Education for Emergency Medicine Physicians, Ltd., based in Canton, Ohio. Through countless national lectures, including the ACEP Scientific Assembly annually, and awards including the ACEP National Faculty Teaching Award and the EMRA Robert J. Dougherty Teaching Fellowship Award, Kevin has a proven track record of excellence in education. He is the current Finance Committee Chairperson for national ACEP and serves on the Board of Directors for Physicians Specialty Limited, Risk Retention Group. Kevin was the Academic Chief Resident at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, and has been practicing Emergency Medicine since 1996.
Valerie A. Dobiesz, MD
Valerie is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois in Chicago where she serves as the Associate Residency Director and Education Director. Valerie’s dynamic and innovative teaching style has won her numerous national and regional teaching awards including the ACEP National Faculty Teaching Award in 2000. She is a regular speaker at the American and Illinois Colleges of Emergency Physician Scientific Assembly meetings as well as National Wilderness and Travel Medicine conferences.
Timothy B. Erickson, MD
Tim is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois in Chicago where he serves as the Residency Program Director and Director of Clinical Toxicology. Tim has been a recipient of the ACEP Speaker of the Year Award and the ACEP National Faculty Award in 2003, and has been recognized by the University of Illinois with several Excellence in Teaching Awards. Tim is a regular speaker at the ACEP Scientific Assembly, Wilderness Medicine, as well as National and International Medical Toxicology conferences. He is an engaging speaker who emphasizes active learning with an injection of humor.
Mel Herbert, MD
Mel Herbert is nationally recognized as a gifted emergency medicine educator who consistently delivers great presentations. As a reflection of his unique ability, he is routinely asked to participate in CME courses throughout the United States and is a frequent “Audio Digest” speaker. Mel has been the recipient of the "Chairman's Teaching Award" at UCLA and is a faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Los Angeles County / University of Southern California Medical Center. Mel is also the producer of a highly regarded monthly audio program known as EM:RAP - Emergency Medicine: Reviews and Perspectives.
William Mallon, MD
Currently the Director of International Emergency Medicine at the Los Angeles County / University of Southern California Medical Center, and formerly its residency Program Director for over 10 years, Billy, has been a major influence in creating one of the highest ranked emergency medicine training programs in the country. His enthusiastic speaking style, combined with his solid knowledge base, has resulted in speaking invitations throughout the United States as well as in Canada, Mexico, Great Britain, Italy, Iceland, Chile and Japan. Billy was named the Residency Program Director of the Year in 2003 by AAEM and, in addition, has received the Education Award of the California Chapter of ACEP.
Peter Sokolove, MD
Peter Sokolove has been on a fast track recently when it comes to speaking awards -- all reflecting his passion for teaching emergency medicine in an entertaining, comprehensive and engaging manner. Peter has been the recipient of the ACEP National Emergency Medicine Faculty Teaching Award, the ACEP Outstanding Speaker of the Year Award, the ACEP “Rookie Faculty of the Year” Award and the Cal/ACEP Education Award. Peter is currently the Vice Chair for Education and the emergency medicine residency Program Director at the University of California, Davis, where he has been teaching and practicing since 1994.
Stuart Swadron, MD
Stuart Swadron is currently the emergency medicine residency Program Director at the Los Angeles County / University of Southern California Medical Center. Before emigrating to the United States from Canada he was a rural general practitioner and subsequently has worked in busy emergency departments both here and in Canada before returning to academics. Stuart was named a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2003 and remains on a fast track when it comes to recognition as an emergency medicine educator. His knowledge base is broad and deep and he has a particularly engaging speaking style coupled with a excellent dry wit.
